Newton’s three laws of motion are so integral to everything around us that many people take them for granted. Young children achieve a basic understanding of these laws as they interact with the world around them, but older children, teenagers, and even adults can achieve a deeper understanding and an appreciation for these laws through model rocket kits. This article explains how a school project using Estes model rockets can be used to teach Newton’s second law of motion.
Newton’s second law of motion states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. These may sound like scary “physics” words, but do not let that overwhelm you. Let’s apply these terms to model rocket kits.
Force is a power or energy exerted on an object. When that force is exerted, the object will exert a force of its own in return. With perfectly balanced forces, nothing in the situation will move. This is known as a static situation. Imagine pushing your hand against a brick wall. When your hand exerts a force on that brick wall, the wall “pushes” back with an equal force, and nothing moves at all. This situation is examined in Newton’s third law.
However, in a dynamic situation, the forces are unbalanced. This means that the force exerted on an object and the force returned by the object are not equal. Because these forces are not equal, the object will move. Model rocket kits offer a great way to demonstrate this law.
Mass is the scientific term for all the “stuff” that makes up an object and is measured in grams. On the surface of Earth, mass and weight are generally treated the same way. However, outside of Earth’s gravity, an object will have the same mass but will clearly have a different weight.
Anytime the speed of an object changes, the object accelerates. If the object moves at a greater speed, this is known as positive acceleration. If the object moves at a lesser speed, this is known as negative acceleration (or deceleration).
All of these forces can be seen in the motion of Estes model rockets. Prior to the rocket’s launch, the rocket will be in a static situation where the forces are balanced. When the fuse is lit, the fuel will burn and will produce force that propels the rocket upward.
The rocket’s mass can be measured prior to a launch. Estes model rockets with more or less mass will react differently to equal amounts of force and acceleration.
The rate at which the speed of a rocket increases (or decreases) is the rocket’s acceleration. Different engines and differing amounts of fuel can be used create differing amounts of acceleration. Model rocket kits provide a great illustration of different amounts of acceleration.
The effect of force, mass, and acceleration on the path of a rocket can be varied with different types of Estes model rockets, different types of engines in the rockets, and differing amounts of fuel. These “experiments” can be repeated to analyze the effects of more or less force, mass, or acceleration.
Model rockets are an entertaining way to gain a deeper understanding of Newton’s laws of motion. Rather than being a difficult or boring experiment in a lab, model rockets encourage a student’s sense of adventure. Experimenting with model rockets provides an entertaining forum to analyze these ideas!
Model rockets make a great hobby for people of any age. Sport rocketry was pioneered in 1957 as an educational tool to introduce young adults to the doctrine of rocket flight. Today, hobbyists have access to a great selection, choosing primarily between an Estes Rocket or an alternative from Apogee Components. This article provides a beginners guide to getting started with this hobby.
Your interest in this hobby is a great idea. Launching an Estes rocket together with your child is a great way to find out if your child has any interest in rocketry or not. It is not for everyone, but some kids will love it. Here are few practical tips to help you get started with the hobby.
One of the most important considerations is choosing the right kit based on your child’s skill level and abilities. This will greatly enhance their enjoyment of the rocket. Most of the Estes rocket kits available are recommended for ages ten and over. Estes sets include easy-to-assemble kits, starter sets, and ready-to-fly rockets. For a child who has no assembly skills, you might consider the RTF (ready-to-fly) models, which, as the name indicates, are fully assembled and ready for flying in just a few minutes. If a child has minor assembly skills, choose a model such as the E2X, with little or no assembly required. As a person’s skill level increases, you can appropriately choose a rocket that is more difficult to assemble. Estes also has rockets that require several days to assemble. The more complex the rocket, the higher the skill set needed to assemble it correctly. Since most of their kits require assembly, kids could get frustrated if it requires far more than they are ready to handle. Model rockets usually include other challenges such as one or more engines, a launch system, and other supplies such as glue.
If you want a safe, entry level model rocket kit for a young beginner, try one of the Estes Easy-to-Assemble kits. There is one called the Air Show Launch Set, which is the easiest of all kits to use. Assembly usually takes about one hour. This is also a super safe rocket because it is not powered by an engine, but by four “AA” batteries (not included). The kit contains two jets which, when launched, separate and circle overhead. The gliders are about 16.5 inches in length and contain a parachute for recovery purposes.
For someone above the beginner level, but still learning, the Estes E2X Rocket Kit is a great starter. The rocket is powered by an engine and can soar as far as 1,100 feet. A parachute allows the rocket to be retrieved and used over and over. The E2X Rocket Kit was the first rocket produced by Estes and still maintains a best-selling status for Estes.
Another important consideration is safety. To be safe, younger kids between the ages of 10-12 require adult supervision. Older kids might also require adult supervision, depending on their level of maturity and their track record. One important reason for adult supervision is to avoid starting fires. Since most model rockets use pyrotechnic (combustible) engines, caution must be taken to ensure that you are not using your rocket in a dry or highly populated area.
The engines used in model rockets are designed for safety. The engines are flammable at 500 degrees but anything is flammable at 500 degrees! Unless you plan to put the engines in your oven at 500 degrees, you should be okay. If you do plan to put them in your oven, you already need help and should find another hobby. Kids can safely handle the engines because they will not be handling any hazardous material. The casing is biodegradable and nontoxic. The engines are preloaded with a propellant and are a one-time-use engine.
For added safety, stay with well known brands. Every Estes rocket has added safety features such as their electrically ignited engine. Because of this igniter plug technology, misfires are uncommon. Don’t panic when you see smoke coming from the engine after launch. The smoke is normal and makes it easier to sight and recover the rocket after it lands. The parachute is designed to gently guide the rocket to the ground, alleviating or eliminating any damage during landing.
Used correctly, these rockets can provide you, and your child, with a lifelong enjoyable hobby or competitive contests and challenges. Estes rocket launches are used as school science projects all across America. Bringing science to “life” is a way to give students hands-on skill building, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment. Estes model rockets are endorsed by both the US Space Foundation and the U.S. Space Camps and are available at most hobby stores.
What begins as a hobby can sometimes ignite a passion in kids that can lead to a lifelong career. Statistics provided by the National Association of Rocketry show that model rockets have inspired young adults to choose technology-related careers. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out this hobby can have long term benefits.

Blast off to learning success! Educators are recognizing numerous exciting benefits to using model rocketry in the curriculum. It’s an economical resource, with quality model rocket kits available from many manufacturers ranging from Estes model rocket kits to Aerotech, LOC and Edmonds models. Experienced teachers give many different reasons why model rocketry is such a motivational and high-energy tool with a great success rate.
Good general skills developed by using trusted brands like Estes model rocket kits include psycho-motor skills, knowledge of spatial relations, attention to detail, conceptual thinking skills, and sense of accomplishment. Through careful coaching on how to use model rocket kits, students can attain a better awareness of safety and increased attention to detail. An opportunity to demonstrate expertise and knowledge before others is just what some students need to gain a healthy self-confidence and motivation to try harder with their studies.
School projects using model rocket kits can capture the imagination of students. The awe of watching Estes model rockets soar into the sky on launch day may well launch an underachieving student into a lifelong interest in science and a successful engineering degree.
In this day and age, model rocketry provides a launch-pad for technology literacy that is becoming a major educational priority. Students studying rocketry become familiar with technical concepts, terms, and techniques almost by osmosis. You’ll hear them speaking intelligently of lift and loft, engine boosters, and trajectory.
Through studying rocket theory, forming hypotheses, and testing them through carefully planned rocket launch experiments, students can practice the scientific method. They can purchase interchangeable model rocket kits and test different body styles or launch angles, measuring vertical and horizontal distance traveled. Or they could even test different brands, comparing Aerotech to Estes model rocket kits for durability and reusability for instance. Working carefully with their peers in “research teams”, even elementary students can learn how to design and carry out scientific investigations and even how to properly document the process through lab notes and reports.
The process of researching rocketry principles, then planning, building, and launching their own model rocket is science in real live action. Students learn theory and then experience the hands-on application. They feel a sense of accomplishment recognizing that this is bigger than just “kid stuff”. Don’t be surprised to hear everyone talking excitedly about their model rocket kits, and asking for more.
Teachers can also use a growing interest in rocketry to aid students’ broader educational development. Students with an enthusiasm for model rocketry will dive right into rocket-related books in their reading class, and even reluctant writers have a chance to shine when writing about the exciting rocket process. Mathematics practice slips in almost without being noticed as students make necessary calculations to carry out their project.
Foster cooperative learning by allowing students to work together in teams. Create community connections by inviting family members and even the public and media to participate in launch day! Have students give a brief presentation of what they’ve learned leading up to this exciting day. Then the big day finally comes. As the countdown begins, cameras flash and students hold their breath in eager anticipation. Then, with an explosion like fireworks, they’re off! Launching Estes model rocket kits and watching them soar high into the blue sky is a grand culmination of learning and points the way to ever greater opportunities.

Most people have some older train models in the attic; whether they actually belonged to them a few years ago or whether or not they belonged to relatives that were alive before the 1950s dip in popularity. But, model railroads are well and truly back, and a lot more popular than ever. Adults and children alike love to build their own model railroads and there are a lot of individuals all over the planet that participate during this trend every day. If you are a beginner then it could be troublesome to understand where to start out when it comes to assembling your own model railway and so model railroad layout kits might get you to get started.
You'll be able to build a model railroad to be as realistic to the actual landscape as you want. Most model railroad layout kits will truly embrace a locomotive and tracks for it as well as things which will be used for scenery, and this might include realistic vegetation or replicas of actual buildings. They generally have themes hooked up to them, however you can find various model railroad layout kits to suit you.
They will be on a little scale with very little within the approach of content or they can contain a whole starter kit that you can then work on and upgrade whenever you like. The one disadvantage of these larger model railroad layout kits is that they have an inclination to be terribly expensive thus you will need to start out small.
You'll get hold of model railroad layout kits kind specialist stores with larger toy stores. The latter is clearly designed for youngsters but is excellent for those inexperienced in the craft and provides a base to work off of.
The track is one amongst the most vital things within the model railroad layout starter kit. Without the track, the scenery, structures and locomotive itself would be completely useless. In model railroad layout kits the tracks typically come in pieces so you'll have to put them together yourself and, relying on the manufacturer, this could be quite tough to do. But, if you're taking the time and the hassle to gather a very little bit of patience, you may learn more from doing it yourself than if it were already put together for you.
There are three types of track within the model railroad layout kits that are on the market:
1. Continuous loop - This track goes around during a continuous circle and is the most basic of tracks.
2. Out and back - This track is made in a very pear kind of shape and generally incorporates a station so as to reverse it when necessary.
3. Point to point - This is a straight track with a train going from one end to the other and back again.
Model railroad layout kits will really facilitate you to get your model up and running. It may look good, but the worth is more than the aesthetics. It will have taught you how to get your own railroad up and running and you can't place a price on that!

RC Helicopters, one of mankind's the most fascinating invention, grab people's attention wherever they are flown. Not surprisingly, RC Helicopters earned its place as one of the most intriguing hobby to pursue. This fact probably came to be because of the addictive, gripping and exciting nature of this leisure pursuit. To add to that, the models themselves represent the finest modern day miniature technology can offer.
Not long ago, very few have ever had the pleasure of getting a taste of flying these amazing machines. For a simple reason – once upon a time they cost way too much to buy and way to expensive to maintain. Alas – many thought this hobby would be and forever remain amongst one of those exclusive to the rich. Also, some people did not like the smell of gasoline exhaust or the loud noise of the engine. Fear not! Those days are gone!
Most people can now very easily afford to fly RC helicopters thanks to the tremendous improve of batteries, motors, and general electronics in the past few years. These innovations result in a new field of RC – electric RC helicopters – which at the same time opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. These include flying helicopter indoors and right at your own backyard while at the same time causing absolutely no pollution and much less noise. Moreover, maintenance costs which used to scare most people now shrink down so low that it won't hurt your wallet in any way.
Recent technologies also allow these new breed of RC to be built much smaller than their predecessors. This not only fulfills many people's childhood dream of indoor flights, it also makes for easy transporting. Not that it has to be carried very far since it can be flown right at your house. The need for tedious maintenance greatly decreased as well. You can forget hauling around heavy flight box full of equipment. If any repairs became necessary, it can usually be carried out in full with nothing more than a screw driver. Often times repair can be made using bare hands.
Reliability of these electric machines improves greatly when compared to the gas versions because they use electrical motors instead of nitro engines. Electric motors come much cheaper, much less tedious, and much less dirty. Unlike gas engines, electric motor almost never cuts out like an engine does. This means no more stalled engine in mid air!
Don't think for one second that electric flights won't last long. Modern RC models use Lithium Polymer batteries. These types of batteries will allow electric flights to last as long as – or longer – than gas-powered flights. Moreover, when running out of gas, nitro helicopter engines will suddenly cut out. On the other hand, their electric brothers will slowly power down, providing ample time to safely land.
Beginners will find that it's now much easier to get a hang of this hobby. Whereas nitro helicopters can easily draw buckets of sweat from learning pilots, these new electric ones prove much easier to master. No longer are six channels required to fly, now helicopter pilots can start learning at only 2, 3, and 4 channels. Some models even use two main rotors that turn in opposite directions, eliminating the need for a tail rotor. This means one less channel to worry about while learning. And what's more, most of these beginner helicopters fly right of the box. No more spending weeks trying to assemble complicated kits.
On the other hand, for experienced pilots, high-end modessuch as Align's T-Rex 450 and T-Rex 600 offers high performance 3D crafts that will excite even the most avid pilots.
Where once flying a small model helicopter around in your own home was once a far-fetched dream, electric RC helicopters has made that dream a very vivid and extremely enjoyable reality!
There are many ways to become a fitness model; none of them and a combination of them all will probably be the way you get there, if you do, but there are a few simple steps to take: we’ll call it “The Idiots Checklist for How to Become a Fitness Model,” and it starts with perhaps the most dunderheaded beginning of ‘em all.
To become a fitness model you must:
Get Fit: It’s no secret that a lot of us have an inaccurate self image; the short think they’re tall, the repugnant think they’re charming, the evil think they’re kind; so it should come as no surprise that some people think they are “fit” when they are. . . Not so much. And “fit” doesn’t only mean “thin.” Of course while thin is a starting gate, you must also represent “fit.” Okay, so, what does “fit” mean to you? Well, for starters, good diet and exercise. You’re not trying to be Kate Moss here; I would not call Kate Moss fit at all; think more along the lines of Patty Duke. Remember you’re trying to represent fit for the world. So what does the world think fit is? Well I can guarantee you that alcohol and drugs don’t fit. Nor does sexual promiscuity, multiple partners, or hanging your baby out a window.
You’ve gotten fit; now develop an image: This is the you that you want to sell to the world. What is it about you that makes you, you? We all know Geared lost a thousand pounds eating Subway sandwiches; we’ve all heard John Edwards talking about “Two Americas” for the last eight years; but what have you done lately that stands out? Why should people want to emulate you? Because that’s what fitness models are: squeaky clean on the outside and able to withstand close inspection on the inside.
Get a clue: Where, where you live, is there a need for a fitness model? Do you live in Dubuque and want to go straight to Del Mar? Take baby steps to discover where your message would fit best in your local community; then move to the last
Get outta Dodge: Once you’ve established some local street cred, done a few events at the Mall, hung out with some fire fighters, done some community service, planted a tree, saved a stranded kitty, sung the National Anthem, and compiled all this into a press kit, then you’re off! New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, or maybe right in your own town. Find your spot, settle in, and look for rent control.
Becoming a fitness model is hard work. You’ve got to improve yourself and understand why, improve your community and understand how, before you improve the world. Only then will you understand your life’s work as it’s always been, as a fitness model.
I've spent several years writing articles/blogs where I've not only honored my writing ability I also improved my researching skills.
Who Collects What
Every person has their things they collect, no matter how odd they might be. There's also a trend that some things, one gender usually collects. For girls it's normally the dolls and teddy bears or the china sets. Then there are the toys for the guys. The rare coins and the stamps are more of their collectables as some guys like history; but nothing can replace the guys' favorite collectable: the model cars. While some take them out of the box and piece them together, believe it or not, some guys just leave it in the box to say they have it. But, how much money are they worth if you leave them in the box? I did some digging to find out the proper things to keep in mind when you collect model cars, whether you are a guy or a girl!
What to Look for in a Collectible
Every collector has those features that they look for, but it's the price these things carry that means the most to people. Maybe it's the knowing they are worth something if you need to make some easy cash. Whatever the reasons may be, you might be wondering what to look for. Here are some tips if you're thinking of collecting these babies.
Collectors of these model cars like it when they buy their cars already boxed. Nothing makes these collectors feel more like little kids than when they start painting the exterior. The people who collect these things live on the "fumes" to put together each and every piece as they would fix their very own car. They put delicate touches to each area of the body and the interior as well. Each person has their own choice for color, but what really sells seems to be the older cars that people fall in love with. It's sort of how people fantasize about their true life dream cars; the older, the better. The more detail the car has also draws the collectors. What most people think will draw people into buying the kit may not actually be. Most items people collect have a certain value, or flaws that make them very special. While digging into what makes collectors of these model cars buy them, I have found out it's nothing like that. They are living dreams through the model cars of their taste. So, it's pretty hard to depict the buying trend or what to look for. It is all decided by the types of cars or motorcycles they are into.
Picking the Right Color
There are some hot colors. This does depend on the style. The more classic cars, which were around before the 1980's seem to favor black, red, and yellow. The newer cars go for the grays, blues, and other variety of colors. Much like today, many people favor both the bright bold colors as well as the more business savvy colors. Again, it's all in what you prefer. So, don't hold yourself back. Dream what you want to dream. Where you can't always have the car you want in real life, with these model cars, any car you want is right with in your reach!
Almost or many RC airplane enthusiast dream of having their favorite full size replica to bore holes in the sky. But it will not be easy just to copy the exact dimension of the full size airplane and then scale it down to what ever you desire, like for example 1/8 scale, ¼ scale so forth and so on. Even though you know how to use CAD software to design and draw the airplane, without considering the aerodynamic principles, you won't have a stable airplane. So this is the first step on how to fly scale model airplanes. It will be impossible to fly your scale model airplane without considering the aerodynamic design. Again, before you attempt to build & fly your very first scale model, you should have already build your skill to at least an intermediate level. Meaning, flying a non-scale shoulder wing design type of model airplane. Then choose the trainer type full-scale model airplane like the Cessna 150 or J3 Piper Cub.
At least those airplanes have a built-in stability design. The wings constant chord and rectangular (for J3 Piper Cub). High wing location, meaning the wings is above the fuselage, which have pendulum stability. Landing gear is tricycle type (for Cessna 150). But wait, does this mean the stability is the same when you scale down those airplanes? The answer is No. Those airplanes will fly terrible when you scale it down and copy the exact dimensions. Like what I've mentioned previously, the aerodynamic design should be considered. This phenomenon is known as " The Scale Effect". You can't scale down the air molecules & the viscosity of air. The behavior will be different. The wing location & wing area, horizontal and vertical stabilizer area & location, airfoil design, plays a major role on its stability.
Redesigning the airplane is essential. The model has to be redesigned based on the lift and drag coefficients and Reynolds number on its miniature dimensions to achieve stability. This is why some Almost Ready to Fly, Ready to Fly or Kits have 30% or 40% scale specification. Meaning only 30% was copied from the full size airplane. Possibly the horizontal stabilizer area was modified or vertical stabilizer. Changed the airfoil type or wing area. In order to achieve stability. The closer its size to the full size airplane, the more you can copy the exact dimension and behavior. This is why ¼ scale model airplanes are popular to those really serious on RC airplane modeling. Considering the cost and set-up, danger to life and property, it will only be possible for those who were well to do. Imagine how many gallons of fuel it will consume! You will also need bigger flying field. Good thing that gas or petroleum engines (chainsaw engines) are fit to use in those monsters which reduces the cost of fuel. Unlike using methanol, castor oil and nitromethane for fuel on glow engines.
So before having any expectations on acquiring one, first consider those facts.
